Why it's on The Cornrow

Yvadney Davis is on The Cornrow's One to Watch list of Black British artists. She is deservedly receiving her flowers for beautiful work showcasing the British Caribbean experience - Davis has been shortlisted by the Royal Academy of Art and ING Discerning eye.

Her work is textured, dramatic and precise. Yvadney says she listens to Jazz while she paints and I think you can hear it in the work. Kemi and Lara first came across her on Insta and pretty soon later were seeing her work at exhibitions and galleries. We are happy to have convinced her to list her work on The Cornrow and create this beautiful exclusive Gele illustration just for The Cornrow customers.

Yvadney Davis

Yvadney Davis is an award-winning London-based portrait artist championing her British Caribbean experience. Her work is inspired by the connection of nostalgia and joy between the Windrush Generation of Caribbean post-war immigrants to the UK and its descendants. Davis aims to keep alive memories and dreams of those that came before her, while celebrating the everyday of her community.
Davis uses acrylic paint built up in layers to show movement and play with texture. She references iconic design elements from Windrush Generation homes into her art practise, such as vintage wallpaper or soft furnishing. When she paints she feels as if she is levitating and uses loud music, typically jazz, to connect on a soulful level with her subject.

Davis's work has been shortlisted by the Royal Academy of Art and ING Discerning Eye; as well as seen in publications and podcasts including Create!, Seen Magazine, Women Who Rebrand and the Evening Standard; She has been included in multiple group exhibitions including Casild Art and M&C Saatchi x Harrods and was the winner of 2022's Art United Painting Prize.
