Windrush Child by Benjamin Zephaniah

In this heart-stopping adventure, Benjamin Zephaniah shows us what it was like to be a child of the Windrush generation.

Leonard is shocked when he arrives with his mother in the port of Southampton. His father is a stranger to him, it’s cold and even the Jamaican food doesn’t taste the same as it did back home in Maroon Town. But his parents have brought him here to try to make a better life, so Leonard does his best not to complain, to make new friends, to do well at school – even when people hurt him with their wordsand with their fists.

How can a boy so far from home learn to enjoy his new life when so many things count against him?

‘An invaluable story for any young readers who enjoy adventure and want to learn more about the Windrush generation’s experience.

Review by Lamide, aged 9

This book is a real thriller. From hiding in bushes to dancing in nightclubs. The journey of Leonard and his family is gripping. It really showed me the other side of England, the racism and bullying. The book also taught me that you cannot call all people “bad” as there are some good people along this ride.

Leonard was born in Jamacia and had only met his dad once before his dad packed up and moved to England on Empire Windrush. Leonard and his mum reunited with his dad by moving to England and starting a new life. This book shows how hard it can be to adjust to different places.
