And you thought Rosa Parks was the only bus boycott heroine? Her pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott when she refused to give her seat up to whites certainly earned her the honour of "the first lady of civil rights", but other women were prepared to take a stand too.
Parks' move sparked the boycott, but there was concern that her case would become ensnared in the courts of the state of Alabama. So Mary Louise Smith, Aurelia Browder, Claudette Colvin and Susie McDonald, also victims of the discrimination, brought a case in 1956 challenging the segregation rules as being against the US constitution. And they won.
This tea towel celebrates all of these heroines and the role they played in ending such discriminatory and humilating practices.
