Black Liturgies: Prayers, poems and meditations for staying human by Cole Arthur Riley

In the summer of 2020, Cole Arthur Riley longed for a spirituality she could trust.

Amidst national racial violence, pandemic isolation, and anti-Black rhetoric in Christian spaces, she envisioned a safe haven for a more freeing expression of faith. Thus, Black Liturgies was born, a digital project that links spiritual practice with Black emotion, memory, and the Black body.

This book expands upon that work, presenting 43 liturgies that can be practiced alone or in a community, through prayers, letters, poetry, meditation questions, breath work, and the words of Black literary leaders. With a poet's touch and a sensitive approach, Riley invites readers to contemplate their experiences of wonder, rest, frustration, and healing, while also providing liturgies for occasions like Lent, Advent, and Mother's Day.

For those recovering from damaging spiritual spaces, struggling with white Christian nationalism, religious homophobia, or transphobia, and anyone seeking to understand the complexity of humanity in a world
